NO SKATING DEC 1-2

There is no skating on Friday and Saturday (Dec 1-2) due to Kla How Ya in Smithers.

SIMULATION DAY ON NOV 18

This coming Saturday, November 18, 2023 we will be having a simulation day for all skaters in Starskate.  Even if your child is not registered for the competition, they will still participate in the simulation day.

A "simulation day" is almost like a "pretend" competition for the skaters.  All of the STAR skaters will be doing at least one simulation this coming Saturday.

The list for the schedule for simulations will come out on Thursday, November 16th.  When skaters go to a competition, they don't know their skating order until they arrive at the rink so this simulates this unknown to help skaters adapt to having to think about their "plan" for the day quickly.  Skaters will be scheduled some time between 8:00am and 1:00pm.

WHEN TO ARRIVE:

Competitions and simulations can run up to 30 minutes ahead of time.  Skaters should arrive at the rink AT LEAST one hour prior to their scheduled skating time.  The skater needs to check in with the coach, complete and off ice warmup and then prepare to do their warmup and then perform their event.  A reminder that in order to do off ice warmup skaters must have good runners on their feet so make sure you pack these.

WHAT TO WEAR:

Skaters should wear EXACTLY what they are wearing for the competition for the simulation day.  We don’t “save” the good skating tights for the competition…. we wear them on simulation day so if anything feels funny or doesn’t work, we know ahead of time.

Your child should wear their dress or costume with the exact hair, bra, makeup, tights etc.…that they are going to wear on the day of the competition.  Unless a skater has specific hair that has been agreed to with Coach Cynthia your child should have their hair in a low bun with all pieces neatly tucked in with hair spray, gel, bobby pins or whatever else you may need.

Skaters will have a warmup before they perform.  Skaters should wear their club jacket or a tight-fitting black jacket with matching mini gloves for the warmup.  If you don’t have a tight-fitting black jacket or club jacket you may be able to purchase one or borrow one.  Contact us at snowvalleyskatingclub@gmail.com or ask on the group chat.

SKATE CONDITION:

Your child’s skates need to be CLEAN for simulations and the competition. You can use a magic eraser to clean most of the marks off of your child’s skates.  If their laces are dirty, you can clean them or order new laces.

This is also a good time to consider washing your child’s guards if they need it.  Guards can be washed on the top rack of the dishwasher but you may want to use a brush to clean out the inside of the guards first.

WATCHING AND SUPPORTING:

It is important for us to support all of our skaters.  Older skaters should be there to cheer on our newer skaters and provide support, encouragement and advice.  Younger/newer skaters should watch the older skaters to support them, learn from them and enjoy seeing what they may be working towards.

NUTRITION:

If you attended the seminar, you will know that nutrition is very important for skaters at all times but most importantly during competitions and simulations.  Talk to your skater about what foods they will eat before during and after the simulations and the competition.  The skater should eat about 1.5 hours before they perform so someone with an 8am performance should really be up and eating at 6:30am.

Only water will be allowed in the dressing room unless there is a medical need for the skater to have something else.

CELL PHONES AND PHOTOS:

Photos and videos are not permitted to be taken in the dressing room so please remember this when you are at the rink.  When the skaters travel to the competition parents will NOT be allowed in the dressing room area at all.  There will be ONE dressing room outside of the secure are for parents to help young skaters get changed or tie skates but once the skater is ready, they must stay in the secure area.

This is a good time for skaters and parents to try this out.  Let your child have some freedom in the dressing room without you if possible.

WHO CAN ATTEND:

You are welcome to invite family, friends and neighbours to watch simulations.  The more people in attendance, clapping, making noise etc.…the better for our skater to “simulate” what is going to happen at the competition.  More support for our skaters is also ALWAYS BETTER!!!
